Farewell Middle School

Throughout all of  8th grade I set goals for myself. One of my goals were to get all A’s and B’s the whole school year. Which I accomplished. Another goal that I accomplished was to stop procrastinating on doing homework or projects, after I stopped doing this my homework grades started to rise .

Over the course of 8th grade there were a lot of things that happen like my soccer team placed 1st in our league and I feel like my overall soccer skill has improved so much.  I started to put myself out there more instead of just standing in the background and just watch everything happen. Also the lowest grade I ever got on a report card was a B and I’m proud of that because last year and the year before I would almost always get a C+ or a B-.

Some advice that I would give people that are coming into 8th grade is not to procrastinate homework. Like if you teacher gives you homework over the weekend don’t wait till 9 o’clock on Sunday  night to get it done, instead do it when you get home from school on Friday so that you don’t have to worry about it all weekend. Also try to start to take school more serious to get used to it before high school, so you don’t go through middle school messing around then get to high school and have to change the way you do everything because it will be harder if you wait till then than if you do it as an 8th grader.

World Wildlife Fund

The World Wildlife Fund was founded in April of 1961. The first ever president of this organization was Prince Bernhard of the Netherlands.

Over time the focus of the WWF has evolved from localized efforts in favour of single species and individual habitats to an ambitious strategy to preserve biodiversity and achieve sustainable development across the globe. One animal they are known to help is the Giant Panda, and they have been helping this animal since 1979. They don’t just help animals either, they also address the larger global threats, and force impacts on them. One of their next ongoing project is help protect the Arctic Whales from underwater noise. Natural sound is in danger of being overwhelmed by an increasingly loud, man-made racket, putting narwhals, belugas and bowhead whales at risk. As sea ice melts due to climate change, more industrial activity is moving into Arctic waters, bringing with it dramatic increases in underwater noise.

There are many ways people can help the WWF. You can create a “Panda Nation” fundraising page on the WWF website.  On this page you can have a fundraiser by hosting a marathon, birthday party, or by planning a community project. You can also travel with WWF. They go on trips all around the world and it is a great way for you to learn more about different ecosystems.

`There are many ways that the WWF helps our Earth. Between helping endangered animals and help ecosystems that are dying, every year they do so much to make sure Earth is healthy.

Shopping for Boys vs. Girls

Your at the store shopping for you little brother and sister and you walk over to the clothes section. You will often times see boys clothes advertised with trucks and sports and girls with princesses and dolls. This kind of stuff is what divides kids. Between clothes, toys, and books, they are all pointed towards a specific gender.

It isn’t hard to see that boys and girls toys are divided. For example girls toys will usually have pink or purple and boys will have blue or green. Because of this girls and boys might think that those are the only colors that they can like. They might also think that they are only allowed to play with these specific toys.

Girls and boys clothes are also very divided. Again their clothes are divided by color, but with girls you will find dresses and glitter and for boys you will find sports and athletic wear. This can make it harder to find girls athletic clothes and boys nice dress clothes. Also they might feel pressured to dress this way and only like these types of clothes.

Something else that is divided is books. It is not hard to find out if a book is a “boy” or “girls” book. Girls books will be about drama at school and boys will once again be about sports. This might make girls think they can’t like sports and make boys think they can’t like drama. This can also make girls feel like boys are stronger and make boys believe they are more superior.

Between clothes, toys, and books, they are all pointed towards a specific gender. These is a big problem in today’s society and making kids feel different if they enjoy things that are “meant” for the opposite gender. I hope that this changes the way that you view this topic!

Something I’m Thankful For

I hope that everyone has something to be thankful for. Weather it’s your family, or your house, or your friends. Everyone should be thankful for what they have. One thing I’m thankful for is all of my friends. They make bad times turn good, help boring classes go by faster, and they always make sure I have someone to talk too.

Everyone goes through hard times, but my friends make them all better. One time they made me feel better was when I had lost someone that was always there for me. They helped me forget about it and made me laugh when I was sad. Because of this I knew that I could trust them to always be there to pick me up when I fell down.

Toward the beginning of the school year I didn’t really have any friends in my math class so it seemed like class was really long. After a while I started to talk to the people that sat around me. Now it seems like the class flys by. Once I started to make friends that class became fun and I no longer dreaded going there.

There were a lot of times when I was sad and needed to laugh and friends were there to do that. They always make sure that if I’m sad I have someone to talk to. One time when I had lost a friend that I had been friends with for a while, they made it seem all okay and reminded me that no matter what they would be there for me, even if we weren’t that close of friends anymore. This made me realize that I didn’t need that person because I had them.

My friends have done so much for me like turing bad times good, boring classes go by faster, and make sure that I always had someone to talk to. I just wanted to say thank you for everything you have done for me!

Deforestation just one of the many things that are ruining our environment. Other things like factories, cars, and pollution. Deforestation is doing so many things to our environment like killing animals, impacting millions of people, and cutting down trees.

In parts of the eastern and southern Amazon, 30 years of concerted deforestation have shrunk viable living and breeding territories enough to condemn 38 species to regional extinction in coming years, including 10 mammal, 20 bird and eight amphibian species, scientists found. Some mammals that struggle from this are the Amur Leopard, Asian Elephant, Rhinos, Bonobo, Chimpanzee, and the Giant Panda. For example, in the 20th century, 500,000 Rhinos roamed Africa and Asia, but today very few of them survive outside of national parks and reserves. This is because of poaching and loss of habitat.

Animals aren’t the only one suffering, people are impacted too. Millions of people around the world depend on forests for hunting, gathering and medicine. But deforestation disrupts the lives of these people, sometimes with devastating consequences. In the Greater Mekong in Southeast Asia, where land tenure systems are weak, deforestation has contributed to social conflict and migration. In Brazil, less fortunate people have been lured from their villages to remote soy plantations where they may be abused and forced, at gunpoint, to work under inhumane conditions.

Deforestation is mostly caused by illegal logging. National laws regulate the production and trade of timber products at all stages, from harvesting to processing to sales. These laws can be violated in any number of ways, such as taking wood from protected areas, harvesting more than is permitted and harvesting protected species. Illegal logging occurs around the world, and in some places, illegal logging is more common than the legal variety. This destruction threatens some of the world’s most famous and valuable forests, including rainforests in the Amazon, Congo Basin, Indonesia and the forests of the Russian Far East. Poor communities near forests are often vulnerable when outsiders try to gain control over the timber nearby, which can lead to repression and human rights violations.

Deforestation is ruining our environment! It is killing so many animals every year. Not only animals people are losing their needs because we are losing forests. I hope you now know what a big problem deforestation is and what it does to our environment.

Addiction is affecting people worldwide and is a serious topic. So many people are affected by it. Addiction is the fact or condition of being addicted to a particular substance, thing, or activity.

According to the National Survey on Drug Use Health, 21.5 million American adults (aged 12 and older) were addicted to drugs in 2014. In 2014 America’s population was 318.6 million, so about 15% of people were addicted that year alone. In addition 5% of them were under the age of 18. When most people become addicted they start off saying that it’s just once, then it happens again, and it progressively gets worse from there. More than 72,000 people died in 2017 from drug abuse.

A lot of people don’t understand why people become addicted to drugs. Drug addiction is a complex disease, and quitting usually takes more than good intentions and a strong will. Drugs change your brain to make you think that you need these things. It’s like how our brain tells us that we need to breath, drugs will change your brain to make it think that you need these substances. Most drugs affect the brain’s “reward circuit,” causing euphoria as well as flooding it with the chemical messenger dopamine.

Drug addiction is a very serious issue that affects so many adults in the world and additionally many adolescents. People that become addicted have to try so hard to overcome addiction. Drug addiction is nothing to joke around about, it is a very serious problem that not only people in the U.S. have to deal with, but people worldwide.

Character Analysis of Meg Murry

Have you ever wondered what it was like to travel to different dimensions? Well the book “A Wrinkle in Time” does a good job of portraying that. The main character named Meg has a very unique personality, what makes it unique is what motivates her actions, events that changed her, and how she changed from the beginning to the end of the story.

Meg has a very outgoing personality and she will do anything to get her dad back, but at a few times in the story you can tell that she was nervous. Like when they were tessaring for the first time or when she had to go save Charles Wallace from It. Meg was also the leader out of the group of kids because there were times when Calvin and Charles wanted to split up but Meg reminded them that Mrs. Whatsit told them that no matter what don’t split up.

When Meg was little her father disappeared and she was eager to find him. This is what motivated her. She knew that her father was in danger and was trapped someone and she knew that she had to find and help him. She was very motivated to find her dad and nothing was going to stop her.

There were many events that changed Meg’s character. One of those events was when Mrs. Whatsit told her mom that the Tesseract was real. This changed Meg because at first she didn’t know what the Tesseract was, then her mom told her that it was something that her and Meg’s father used to joke about, then Meg was left wondering about what it was. Another thing that changed Meg was when they finally found her dad and when he was trapped in the transparent wall when she could see him but he could not see her. This changed Meg because she had finally found her father but it still seemed like they were so far away because he couldn’t see her, and she had to find out a way to get to her dad.

At the beginning of the story she didn’t like herself and got bullied. She was always stressed out and mad at school because they were teaching it differently from how her father taught her. Also she was always worrying about her father asking herself if he was still alive. Then the moment she found him all of her worries left her. Now the principle couldn’t say anything about her dad not being there, he couldn’t say that it was time to face the truth and that her father was dead because she was with him then. By the end of the story she wasn’t scared to do anything to help her and her family, as in the beginning she was kinda hesitant to tessar to new dimensions with Mrs. Whatsit, Mrs. Who, and Mrs. Which.

As you can see Meg has a very unique story and personality. There was so much that motivated her, like finding her father. Also throughout the story she became such a strong person and nothing was going to get in the way of finding her father.

My Future!

When I grow up I want to do a lot of things, like play professional soccer, travel the world, and become one of the women soccer players in the world. One of my biggest goals are winning a World Cup sometime in my career.

I have had to make a lot of sacrifices in order to get as good at soccer as I am. I have had to quit the team I had been playing for since I was 7, so that I could start playing in one of the top leagues in the country. Also there have been many times when I couldn’t go to my friends houses on the weekend because I was out of town for a soccer game. I have soccer practice Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. I most of the time have games on Saturday, and Sunday. It’s very hard to have sometime to myself because it seems like I always at soccer.

Another thing that I did so that I could get closer to reaching my goal is setting up a recruiting page on NCSA so that college coaches could look at my profile and see who I am and how I play. On this website I post videos of me playing, and if college coaches look up the position I play videos of me and other girls will come up. This has helped because by doing this I am putting myself out there for coaches to see and I will have a better chance of getting recruited.

I have a few colleges in mind that I want to go to. Two of my main choices are South Florida University or North Florida University. These are just so ideas but I mainly want to go somewhere in Florida. I know that I want to go somewhere in Florida because when I went to Florida I just fell in love with the weather and the whole state itself. I want to major in journalism because when I have some free time I love to write, or I also love to do this when I’m stressed or have something that’s bothering me. Another thing that I do in my free time is play the piano or take picture of things outside, like trees, or just anything in nature. I also love riding my skateboard and listening to music.

I hope to have a good future and life when I grow up. There are so many things that I want to do. I always remind myself of these goals and all of the things I have to do to meet them like keeping good grades, and working my best when I’m at soccer.

Island Adventure

Me and my friends were so excited. We were on our way to a small island off of Cuba. No one stayed on this island so it was pretty much deserted. I was excited but also nervous, we were going alone with none of our parents with us. Later last night we got on a plane to fly to Atlanta, after we landed we had to get on another plane to go to West Palm Beach in Florida where we would be taking a boat to the island.

The reason we were going to this island was because I entered a contest to see if me and 3 of my friends could stay on an island alone for 2 and a half weeks and if we could than we would win 5.5 million dollars. The way this worked was I went to a website and entered my name and contact information and if they picked me they would contact me and get to go to the island. They would also pay for me and my friends plane tickets and transportation to get us to the Island.

At this time it was early in the morning, about 6am, I was the only one awake my friends fell asleep as soon as they got on the boat. I on the other hand was to worried about what we had to do.  Don’t worry they weren’t just going to drop us off, we had our own part of the island and so did they, we just weren’t allowed to go on there part unless there was an emergency like if we need more food or if someone gets hurt. Now I was going to try to get some sleep so I;m not so tired when we get to the island.

Next thing I remember was my friend waking me up and saying “Oh my god Gracie look we’re here!” My energy level went from about negative one hundred to one thousand fast. I was so happy and the island was so beautiful it was like it wasn’t real. Then the nervousness came back, but this time worse. It felt like my stomach flipped upside down, I was also feeling kind of nauseous maybe it was just because I haven’t eaten anything since yesterday.

“Alright kids time to get off! Have fun!” Called the captain of the boat.

We all grabbed our stuff and got off, for some reason I wasn’t as nervous but all I could hear was my friend Aunica complaining about how she wasn’t going to have her phone for 2 weeks. This was actually the least of my worries. I was more worried about things like food, water, and shelter, rather than my phone.

The first night went by fast and it was morning before we knew it. I was the first one to wake up so I made a fishing poll and decided to try to catch something for breakfast. It was actually easier than I thought, don’t get me wrong it still took a lot of work it was just easier than i thought. It took about 30 minutes to catch a pretty big fish I thought would be enough to feed all of us.

Nothing really happened the rest of the day, we pretty much just built shelter and found food. We were all trying to help except Aunica, she was still complaining about her phone and how she forgot to tell her other friends that she wouldn’t have her phone for 2 weeks.

The first week went by with no problems, but it was 3 nights before we would go home when something happened… We were all just hanging out in our little fort that we built when the wind started to pick up, and we could hear the trees blowing. We all looked at each other with worry. We didn’t know what to do, other than to grab our stuff and run to the buildings that we were supposed to go to in case of emergency. As expected it was hard to run through the trees, especially because of this wind.

Once we made it there we ran inside, all of the lights were out and the emergency team was standing waiting for us at the door. They told us that a small tropical storm was hitting the island and all the power was out. Since the power was out that we had no contact with anyone else and that we would just have to wait the storm out.

I couldn’t sleep at all the night. The only thing I could think about was going home. It seemed as every minute that passed by was an hour, I knew that this would be a long night.

The morning came and it seemed like the storm had passed. It sounded like it was calm outside, just like it had on the first day. Inside the building they had food so i didn’t have to worry about going outside and going fishing. The people that were there with us said that they had contacted the captain of the boat that had brought them there and that he was on his way to pick us up.

Once the boat had got there we all couldn’t wait to get on. As a rule of the contest we had to give our phones to the captain, and when we got on the boat we got them back.

The ride back to Florida was very peaceful. We all spent most of the time on the deck so that we could watch the beautiful ocean scene as we passed. Everything was fine until Aunica pulled out her phone to take a video, not knowing that we were about to hit a wave, and once we hit it her phone flew out of her hand and into the water!

The True Story of Snow White

As you may know the Disney movie, Snow White, has a different story than the original did, but I bet you didn’t know actually how deep they are and how much Disney had to change them to be kid friendly.

The Disney version of “Snow White” as you know it is totally different than the original. In the Brothers Grimm version, the Evil Queen asks a hunter to bring Snow White into the woods and kill her, which also happens in the Disney version, however he is told to bring back her lungs and liver. Once he takes her in the woods he realizes he can’t kill her and brings back pork lungs and liver instead. The Queen eats the lungs and liver thinking their Snow White’s. After the Queen realizes Snow White is still alive she gives her an apple and she passes out and is put in a glass coffin, which is the same as the movie except the prince came and took her as she was sleeping . During the ride the apple becomes dislodged from her throat and she wakes up. She and the prince obviously get married. The Evil Queen is invited to the reception and as punishment she is forced to wear burning hot iron shoes and has to dance until she drops dead.

Don’t get me wrong some parts in the stories are the same, like when the Evil Queen wants Snow White to be taken to the woods to be killed, and about the poison apple. The people are also the same. Other than that their pretty different. Some things that are different are that the queen is invited to the wedding and has to dance in burning shoes until she dies, and how the hunter has to get Snow Whites lungs and liver, but he gives her a pigs instead. As you can see there are things that are the same and different, but some of the things that are different are probably more shocking than you thought they were going to be.
