Me and my friends were so excited. We were on our way to a small island off of Cuba. No one stayed on this island so it was pretty much deserted. I was excited but also nervous, we were going alone with none of our parents with us. Later last night we got on a plane to fly to Atlanta, after we landed we had to get on another plane to go to West Palm Beach in Florida where we would be taking a boat to the island.
The reason we were going to this island was because I entered a contest to see if me and 3 of my friends could stay on an island alone for 2 and a half weeks and if we could than we would win 5.5 million dollars. The way this worked was I went to a website and entered my name and contact information and if they picked me they would contact me and get to go to the island. They would also pay for me and my friends plane tickets and transportation to get us to the Island.
At this time it was early in the morning, about 6am, I was the only one awake my friends fell asleep as soon as they got on the boat. I on the other hand was to worried about what we had to do. Don’t worry they weren’t just going to drop us off, we had our own part of the island and so did they, we just weren’t allowed to go on there part unless there was an emergency like if we need more food or if someone gets hurt. Now I was going to try to get some sleep so I;m not so tired when we get to the island.
Next thing I remember was my friend waking me up and saying “Oh my god Gracie look we’re here!” My energy level went from about negative one hundred to one thousand fast. I was so happy and the island was so beautiful it was like it wasn’t real. Then the nervousness came back, but this time worse. It felt like my stomach flipped upside down, I was also feeling kind of nauseous maybe it was just because I haven’t eaten anything since yesterday.
“Alright kids time to get off! Have fun!” Called the captain of the boat.
We all grabbed our stuff and got off, for some reason I wasn’t as nervous but all I could hear was my friend Aunica complaining about how she wasn’t going to have her phone for 2 weeks. This was actually the least of my worries. I was more worried about things like food, water, and shelter, rather than my phone.
The first night went by fast and it was morning before we knew it. I was the first one to wake up so I made a fishing poll and decided to try to catch something for breakfast. It was actually easier than I thought, don’t get me wrong it still took a lot of work it was just easier than i thought. It took about 30 minutes to catch a pretty big fish I thought would be enough to feed all of us.
Nothing really happened the rest of the day, we pretty much just built shelter and found food. We were all trying to help except Aunica, she was still complaining about her phone and how she forgot to tell her other friends that she wouldn’t have her phone for 2 weeks.
The first week went by with no problems, but it was 3 nights before we would go home when something happened… We were all just hanging out in our little fort that we built when the wind started to pick up, and we could hear the trees blowing. We all looked at each other with worry. We didn’t know what to do, other than to grab our stuff and run to the buildings that we were supposed to go to in case of emergency. As expected it was hard to run through the trees, especially because of this wind.
Once we made it there we ran inside, all of the lights were out and the emergency team was standing waiting for us at the door. They told us that a small tropical storm was hitting the island and all the power was out. Since the power was out that we had no contact with anyone else and that we would just have to wait the storm out.
I couldn’t sleep at all the night. The only thing I could think about was going home. It seemed as every minute that passed by was an hour, I knew that this would be a long night.
The morning came and it seemed like the storm had passed. It sounded like it was calm outside, just like it had on the first day. Inside the building they had food so i didn’t have to worry about going outside and going fishing. The people that were there with us said that they had contacted the captain of the boat that had brought them there and that he was on his way to pick us up.
Once the boat had got there we all couldn’t wait to get on. As a rule of the contest we had to give our phones to the captain, and when we got on the boat we got them back.
The ride back to Florida was very peaceful. We all spent most of the time on the deck so that we could watch the beautiful ocean scene as we passed. Everything was fine until Aunica pulled out her phone to take a video, not knowing that we were about to hit a wave, and once we hit it her phone flew out of her hand and into the water!
